Auckland, surrounded by extinct volcanoes and picturesque islands, urbanizes the narrow isthmus between the Manukau and Waitemata harbors and is known as the 'City of Sails' for the sheer number of yachts which sail in the harbors and the adjoining Hauraki Gulf. Auckland's people are an ethnic amalgam of around 400,000 within Auckland proper and a little over a million in the greater Auckland area, in all representing about one third of New Zealand's population and making Auckland a cosmopolitan nexus in an island country graced with greenery and craggy peaks. From shopping districts like the prestigiously pampered Parnell and the upscale Newmarket to the club district of Karangahape Road and the young, hip crowd in Ponsonby to the mellow, outlying Greenlane area, Auckland is an easily navigable city, especially with "The Link" bus line stitching Auckland together every 20 minutes. At the bottom of Queen Street in Central City, Auckland visitors looking to explore the surrounding Auckland areas can buy a ticket from the Historic Ferry Building and ride the waves to Auckland's North Shore, where the slower-paced Devonport is perfect for perusing craft shops and enjoying world-class cafes. Upon returning to Auckland, take a stroll around Prince's Wharf and the American Cup Village, both popular with yachtmongers. Or, head to Piha or Muriwai Beach to get more of a 'local' flavor. If you ever get stuck, just ask; amicable Aucklanders are only happy to point visitors in the right direction.
